When do We Recommend Space Maintainers?

We often recommend a space maintainer when a primary (baby) tooth is lost too soon. Prematurely losing a primary tooth can cause the other teeth to move into the available space. This movement puts other teeth at risk of misalignment and can cause difficulty chewing and speaking. Space maintainers keep the teeth in the correct position and preserve the space for the permanent tooth. 

The Types of Space Maintainers

Space maintainers come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are custom-made to fit the individual child. The type of space maintainer used will depend on the position of the missing tooth and your child’s age. For example, a band and loop maintainer may be used for a single missing tooth, while we often use a lingual arch maintainer for multiple missing teeth. 

There are two main types of space maintainers: fixed and removable. Dr. Bingham cements fixed space maintainers in place; your child cannot remove them. Removable space maintainers are designed to be taken out and cleaned, and we most commonly use them when all your child’s teeth in a particular area have been lost.

Getting space maintainers is a relatively simple process that requires a few steps. First, you and your child will have a consultation with Dr. Bingham to discuss the need for a space maintainer. We will then take impressions of your child’s teeth, which we will use to model your kid’s mouth. We will send the model to a lab where the space maintainer will be custom-made for your child. Dr. Bingham will then fit the space maintainer in your kid’s mouth and make any necessary adjustments. We may also provide instructions for cleaning and caring for the space maintainer. Once the space maintainer is in place, you will need to schedule your child’s visits to see Dr. Bingham regularly to ensure it is functioning correctly and that the space is maintained.

Are Space Maintainers Painful?

The space maintainers are made of metal and are very small and not noticeable when worn. They are not painful when placed, although some people may experience discomfort for a few days. Taking over-the-counter pain medication can eliminate any discomfort your child might feel.
